MAS Denounces “Unite the Right” March

MAS Condemns the Terror Attack on Peaceful Protestors in Charlottesville, VA, and Decries the Rise of New Nazism
(Washington, DC – August 14, 2017) – The Muslim American Society condemns, in the strongest terms, the White Nationalists “Unite the Right” march that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia this past weekend. We are extremely concerned that marches, rallies and protests of this nature, upholding the ideology of white supremacy and neo- Nazism, is a reality in our country at this time, in our history. It is disrespectful to the values that define us. The march insults the dignity of all American people and makes a mockery of the efforts of the civil rights movement and other like-minded movements that have fought for equality of all Americans.

The consequences of the march are too much to bear in order to protect the liberties of a fringe group whose values could not be more alien to the core values of this country. We are saddened by the senseless loss of life of Heather Heyer, who paid the ultimate price in standing up for the values of unity and equality that defines us as Americans. Our deepest condolences also go to the families of the two police officers, Pilot Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bate who died in the line of duty in a helicopter crash, as they brought resources to the response team on the ground. Our prayers are with the 34 that were also injured, many of whom are in critical conditions.

We call upon President Trump to equally condemn this march, its organizers and all white-supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in the strongest terms that they deserve. We are with the people, in our loudest voices, condemning the racist and violent march in Charlottesville, any and all groups behind it, and all sentiments in support of it, directly or indirectly. The equality of all Americans, guarded by our constitution, is what solely defines us. We ask our community to be involved and to stand strong against forces of hate, bigotry, and divisiveness.
